Most law firms still win a lot of work through referrals and repeat clients. That's not changing. What has changed is that almost every referred client looks you up before they call. They search your firm's name, read your practice area pages and check your reviews.
That means law firm marketing has two jobs. It needs to help new clients find you, and it needs to reassure the people who were already sent your way.
This guide covers what actually brings clients to law firms in Brisbane and Toowoomba, what usually wastes money, and how to stay within the rules while you do it.
What people search when they need a lawyer
Here's what Australians search each month, according to Ahrefs data from October 2026. The difficulty score runs from 0 to 100, and higher means harder to rank.
| Search | Monthly searches | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| employment lawyer brisbane | 2,200 | 44 |
| lawyer near me | 1,400 | 17 |
| criminal lawyer brisbane | 700 | 0 |
| family lawyer brisbane | 600 | 67 |
| divorce lawyer brisbane | 500 | 0 |
| personal injury lawyer brisbane | 500 | 52 |
| lawyers toowoomba | 300 | 43 |
| family lawyer toowoomba | 150 | 61 |
| how much does a family lawyer cost | 150 | 0 |
Two things stand out. People search by practice area and location, not for "a lawyer". And difficulty varies hugely. Family law is fiercely contested in both cities, while some Brisbane searches, like criminal or divorce lawyers, show far less competition. Where you focus first can make a big difference to how quickly marketing pays off.
What brings in clients
A page for each practice area
A single "Our services" page won't rank for family law, wills and estates, conveyancing and employment law all at once. Each practice area needs its own page.
A good practice area page explains who it's for, the common situations you help with, how the process works, roughly what it costs and what happens at the first meeting. Write it for a worried person, not another lawyer. Good on-page SEO makes sure each page targets the searches clients actually use.
If you serve both Brisbane and Toowoomba, consider location pages for your main practice areas, with genuine local detail rather than copies with the city name swapped.
Honest answers about cost
"How much does a family lawyer cost" gets about 150 searches a month with almost no competition. Cost is one of the biggest worries people have before they call a lawyer.
You don't need to publish a price list. But explaining how you charge, what affects the cost, whether you offer fixed fees for some matters and what the first consultation costs makes people far more comfortable getting in touch. It also brings in better-qualified enquiries.
Lawyer profiles that build trust
Clients hire people, not logos. Give each lawyer a profile page with a photo, their admission details, practice areas, experience and a few lines about how they work with clients.
Be careful with the word "specialist". Under the solicitors' conduct rules, you mustn't give a false impression of specialist expertise, and only lawyers accredited through a recognised scheme, such as the Queensland Law Society's, can call themselves accredited specialists.
A Google Business Profile for each office
When someone searches "lawyer near me" or "lawyers Toowoomba", the Google Maps results usually appear first. Each office needs a complete Google Business Profile with accurate practice areas, hours, photos and a steady flow of reviews.
When you reply to reviews, keep client confidentiality front of mind. Never confirm someone was a client or mention their matter. A short, polite, general reply is safest.
Referral partners who send you work
Some of the best law firm marketing doesn't happen online at all. Accountants, financial planners, mortgage brokers and real estate agents regularly meet people who need a lawyer.
Build a few strong referral relationships, keep in touch, and make it easy for partners to send people your way. When they do, those clients will still look you up, so your website needs to back up the recommendation.
Getting found in AI search
More people now ask ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews questions like "who's a good employment lawyer in Brisbane?" or "how does divorce work in Queensland?". These tools draw on websites, reviews and business listings.
You're more likely to be mentioned if your practice area pages, lawyer profiles and firm details are clear, accurate and consistent everywhere they appear. That's the focus of AI search optimisation, and it builds on everything above.
Stay within the rules
Law firm marketing in Queensland comes with professional obligations. The main ones to keep in mind:
- Rule 36 of the Australian Solicitors' Conduct Rules. Advertising must not be false, misleading or deceptive, and it must not give a false impression of specialist expertise.
- Personal injury advertising. Queensland's Personal Injuries Proceedings Act heavily restricts how personal injury services can be advertised, including online. Some content is only allowed on the firm's own website. Check the Legal Services Commission's guidance before publishing anything about personal injury work.
- Australian Consumer Law. General rules on misleading claims apply to law firms too.
You're responsible for your firm's marketing, even if an agency writes it, so review everything before it goes live.
What usually wastes money
Every firm is different, but these often cost more than they return:
- Paid premium listings on general directories that few clients use.
- Google Ads on broad terms like "lawyer Brisbane" without call tracking or a strong landing page. Legal clicks are expensive. Ads work better for specific practice areas you can serve well.
- Chasing the hardest terms first. Fighting for "family lawyer Brisbane" before your practice area pages and profiles are strong rarely pays off. Win the easier searches, then build up.
- Social media posting with no clear goal. It can support your reputation, but it rarely brings in new matters on its own.
- A website redesign with the same thin content. A new look won't help if the practice area pages are still a paragraph each.
Track new matters by source
Ask every new client how they found you, and record it in your practice management system. After a few months, you'll see which channels bring in matters, which practice areas they're in and what each source is worth.
That's how you decide where to spend next, instead of guessing.
Market where clients actually look
The law firm marketing that brings in clients isn't flashy. It's a strong page for each practice area, honest cost information, real lawyer profiles, a complete Google Business Profile, a few good referral partners and a clear presence in AI search, all within the conduct rules. Questions law firms ask about marketing
-
For most firms, a strong page for each practice area, honest cost information, lawyer profiles, a complete Google Business Profile for each office and a few good referral partners. Together, they help new clients find you and reassure referred clients who look you up.
-
The conduct rules say solicitors must not give a false impression of specialist expertise. Only lawyers accredited through a recognised scheme, such as the Queensland Law Society's specialist accreditation, can call themselves accredited specialists.
-
Only within strict limits. Queensland's Personal Injuries Proceedings Act restricts how personal injury services are advertised, including online, and some content is only allowed on the firm's own website. Check the Legal Services Commission's guidance before publishing.
-
Explaining how you charge, what affects the cost and what the first consultation costs helps people feel comfortable getting in touch. You don't need a full price list, and your cost disclosure obligations still apply separately.
-
It can be for specific practice areas you serve well, with call tracking and a strong landing page. Broad terms like "lawyer Brisbane" are expensive and often waste budget without that setup.
-
Increasingly, yes. People ask ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews for lawyer recommendations and legal process questions. Clear practice area pages, lawyer profiles and consistent firm details improve your chances of being mentioned.
