How Plumbing Marketing Wins More Jobs From Google Maps

Australians search "plumber near me" about 16,000 times a month. When they do, Google usually shows a map with a handful of local plumbers before any website links.

Most people call from that map. They glance at the stars, check that the plumber covers their area, and tap the phone number. If you're not in those results, you don't get the call.

The good news is that getting into the map isn't a mystery. Google tells you what it looks for. Here's how to give it what it wants, step by step.

How Google decides who shows in the map

Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. In plumbing terms:

You can't change where your business is based. But you can improve relevance and prominence, and that's where most plumbers have plenty of room to grow.

What people search when they need a plumber

Here's what Australians search each month, according to Ahrefs data from October 2026:

Search Monthly searches
plumber near me 16,000
emergency plumber 6,000
hot water system replacement 4,000
plumber brisbane 3,000
emergency plumber near me 2,100
blocked drains 1,900
gas plumber 1,300
emergency plumber brisbane 1,100
plumber toowoomba 300

Notice how many searches name a job: hot water, blocked drains, gas. Google can only match you to those searches if your profile and website make it clear you do that work.

Set up your Google Business Profile properly

Your Google Business Profile is what appears in the map. It's free, and most plumbers set it up once and never touch it again. That's an opportunity for you.

Your name, category and services

Use your real business name, exactly as it appears on your van and invoices. Don't add keywords like "Best Emergency Plumber Toowoomba" unless that's genuinely your registered name. It's against Google's guidelines and a common reason profiles get suspended.

Choose "Plumber" as your primary category. Then add secondary categories that match work you really do, such as drainage or gas services.

Next, list your services one by one: blocked drains, hot water system repairs and replacement, gas fitting, leak detection, burst pipes, bathroom plumbing. Add a short description to each. This is one of the simplest ways to improve relevance.

Service areas and your address

Most plumbers work from home or a yard that customers don't visit. If that's you, Google's rules say to hide your address and set the suburbs or areas you serve instead.

Two things to know:

Never use a fake address or a virtual office to appear in another suburb. It breaks Google's rules and can get your profile removed.

Hours you can actually keep

If you offer after-hours work, say so, and set your hours to match. But only list 24/7 if someone really answers the phone at 2am. A missed call from an emergency search often turns into a bad review.

Real photos

Upload photos of your vans, your team and real jobs: a new hot water system, a cleared drain, a finished bathroom. People want to see who's turning up at their house. Add new photos every month or two so your profile looks active.

Get reviews the right way

Reviews help your ranking and your conversions. A plumber with plenty of recent, genuine reviews looks safer to call than one with a handful from years ago.

Customers often mention the job they needed, like "fixed our hot water system on a Sunday". That's natural and helpful, so there's no need to script it.

Back your profile up with your website

Your profile and your website work together. Google uses your website to understand what you do and where.

Good on-page SEO ties these pages together so Google sees a clear, consistent picture of your business.

Show your QBCC licence

In Queensland, plumbing and drainage work of any value needs a QBCC licence. Customers know this, and many check.

Put your licence number in your Google Business Profile description, in your website footer and on your service pages. It's a small thing that builds trust before someone picks up the phone.

Treat every missed call as lost marketing

All this work is wasted if the phone rings out. Emergency callers rarely leave a voicemail. They just call the next plumber on the map.

Answering fast doesn't just win the job. It leads to better reviews, which feeds your ranking.

Reach suburbs beyond your base

Distance is the hardest factor to beat. A plumber based in Toowoomba's south will usually rank more easily there than in Highfields or Westbrook, even with a service area that covers both.

You can widen your reach over time:

It won't happen overnight, but steady work on relevance and prominence pushes your reach further out.

Win the map, win the call

Google Maps is where most plumbing jobs start. The plumbers who show up there consistently aren't doing anything tricky. They have an honest, complete profile, a steady flow of reviews, a website that backs it up, a visible licence and someone who answers the phone.
