A few weeks ago, I sat down with a cup of coffee and spent a day going through 20 electrician websites in Toowoomba. Not because I enjoy pointing out problems (well, maybe a little), but because I was curious. How are local trades businesses actually showing up online? What are they getting right? And what's quietly costing them leads every single day?
The short answer: there are some really solid websites out there. And there are some that look like they were built in 2009 and left alone ever since.
This post covers what I found, business by business, including their on-page SEO, Google Business Profile setup, internal linking, content quality, and structured data. Schema markup is one of the most overlooked parts of technical SEO for local trades businesses, so I wanted to see who was actually using it and how.
If you're an electrician in Toowoomba, or you work with local trades businesses, this one's for you.
Quick note: I'm not here to embarrass anyone. The businesses listed below are all doing good work in the community. This is about the websites and the missed opportunities, not the businesses themselves.

What I Looked At (And Why It Matters)
Site-by-Site Breakdown
A few quick wins left on the table. No Google Posts, the GBP category isn't quite right, and there are no project pages showcasing their work. Project pages give Google more indexed content and give potential customers something concrete to look at.
On the schema front, the homepage has product snippets and review snippets implemented, which puts it ahead of most sites in this group. That said, there's no LocalBusiness schema, which is the most important one for a local electrician trying to appear in map results.
Has schema: product & review snippetsA solid opportunity for improvement across the board. No reviews or FAQs on the website itself, limited service pages, and the GBP profile isn't fully optimised. No Google Posts activity and no internal link strategy connecting pages together. The service page content reads too general when it could be specific and keyword-targeted.
The homepage has LocalBusiness and Organisation markup. A decent foundation. But with no reviews or FAQs on-site, there's nothing to build AggregateRating or FAQPage schema from. Fix the content first, then the schema will have something to work with.
Has schema: LocalBusiness, OrganisationA DR of 83 means other websites consider this site authoritative. That's strong for a local electrician. But the on-site experience doesn't match that authority. No Google Posts, no reviews or FAQs on the site, and the internal linking structure could be significantly improved.
The homepage has LocalBusiness and Organisation schema, which is a good foundation. With the backlink authority this site has, investing in better content and on-page SEO would likely move rankings quickly.
Has schema: LocalBusiness, OrganisationGenerally decent SEO. Not much to pick apart in terms of rankings. But there are still no Google Posts, no products or services listed on the GBP, and no internal linking strategy. The homepage implements Articles and Organisation schema, though LocalBusiness schema would be a more appropriate choice for a service-area business looking to rank locally.
Has schema: Articles, OrganisationOne of the stronger sites in the group. Good service pages, trust signals, and location pages. The homepage has LocalBusiness, Organisation, and review snippets schema. That's a solid setup and puts it ahead of most in this audit.
The main gaps are no Google Posts and no internal link strategy. Also worth flagging: the site appears to have been built using the old Google My Business website tool, which was deprecated in 2022. If that's still the underlying platform, migrating to a proper CMS should be the first priority. No schema markup will compensate for a platform with no SEO flexibility.
Has schema: LocalBusiness, Organisation, review snippetsThis one has a GBP review count of 156, meaning customers are happy enough to leave reviews in big numbers. That's a real asset. But the website doesn't reflect it at all. No service pages, inactive Google Posts (last one in April), no location pages, no FAQs, and thin content throughout.
And no schema markup of any kind. Not a single line. This is a business with genuine community trust that Google simply can't verify from the website. Adding LocalBusiness schema and pulling those reviews onto the site would be two of the fastest wins available here.
No schema markupMore pages than most. That's a good start. The GBP is well optimised and Google Posts are active, which puts it in a small minority in this audit. But the keyword mapping across the site is inconsistent, title tags are underoptimised, and there's no internal link strategy.
No schema markup at all, which is surprising for a site of this size. A business with active GBP management clearly understands the value of local search. Implementing LocalBusiness and Service schema would extend that advantage onto the website itself.
No schema markupRunning Google Ads, which means they're serious about leads. The site has good service pages and includes reviews and FAQs, both genuinely rare in this group. The homepage has LocalBusiness, Organisation, and review snippet schema implemented too, which is one of the more complete setups in the audit.
The problems: some content reads as clearly AI-generated, the GBP is underoptimised, there are no location pages, and blog posts are canonicalised incorrectly with service pages, which causes content cannibalisation. That last one is worth fixing before spending another dollar on ads. It can actively suppress the rankings of your best pages.
Has schema: LocalBusiness, Organisation, review snippetsAlso running Google Ads. The site focuses on industrial and commercial work only, which limits the range of service pages. No reviews or FAQs, no internal link strategy, but Google Posts are active, one of the few in this group using them consistently.
The homepage has LocalBusiness and Organisation schema, which covers the basics. Expanding the service pages to capture more specific search queries, and adding FAQPage schema once those pages exist, would be the logical next step.
Has schema: LocalBusiness, OrganisationThe site that needs the most attention in this entire audit. Pages aren't optimised for keywords, content is thin, no reviews, no FAQs, no internal linking, GBP not optimised, no Google Posts, and no address listed publicly. A DR of 0 reflects minimal online presence.
The homepage does have LocalBusiness and Organisation schema. That's more than several better-looking sites in this group managed. The structured data foundation is there. Now the content, the GBP, and the rest of the on-page SEO work needs to catch up.
Has schema: LocalBusiness, OrganisationGoogle Posts are being used. That matters. The homepage has product snippets and review snippets schema implemented. One of the better schema setups in the group.
But there's room to expand service pages for more specific services, a canonicalisation issue is causing blog posts to compete with service pages, and there's no internal link strategy. Fixing the canonical tags and building out link building between pages would make a noticeable difference.
Has schema: product & review snippetsNo service pages at all. That's the single biggest issue here. A trades business without dedicated service pages is invisible to anyone searching for a specific type of job. GBP activity has gone quiet, and the title tags are underoptimised.
No schema markup either. Starting with LocalBusiness schema and a handful of service pages targeting specific Toowoomba searches would be the fastest path to any kind of organic visibility.
No schema markupThe site is built on GoDaddy's website builder, which comes with real SEO limitations. No service pages, thin content, no Google Posts, no internal link strategy, and no schema markup.
Moving to a more capable CMS and building out proper service pages would transform this site's visibility faster than trying to patch things on a limited platform.
No schema markupAn older website that hasn't been updated in some time. Thin content, no reviews, no service pages, no internal linking, no Google Posts, and an unoptimised GBP. No schema markup of any kind.
This one could benefit more from a rebuild than a patch job. The current site doesn't give Google much to work with, and adding schema to a site with no content or structure won't move the needle on its own.
No schema markupSimilar story to Downs Electrical. A very old website, thin content, no service pages, no internal links, no Google Posts, and an unoptimised GBP. No schema markup.
The site is also not technically optimised. Slow load times and a non-mobile-friendly layout are likely hurting it in ways that go beyond content. A fresh start with a proper technical SEO foundation would serve them far better than trying to improve what's there.
No schema markupRunning Google Ads on a site that isn't doing its job. Underoptimised title tags, thin content, no reviews or FAQs, and no internal link strategy. No schema markup at all.
When you're paying for every click, the website needs to convert. Investing in on-page SEO and basic schema implementation would improve both the paid and organic performance of this site.
No schema markupAlso running ads (great band name, by the way). Thin content, limited service pages, underoptimised title tags, and content not targeted to keywords. No Google Posts.
The FAQs on the website are a good start. And the homepage has breadcrumbs, LocalBusiness, and Organisation schema. A reasonable foundation. The next step is making the content actually match what people are searching for, then building Service schema for each service page.
Has schema: breadcrumbs, LocalBusiness, OrganisationThin content, limited service pages, new FAQs added to the site (a good start), no internal linking, and no Google Posts. The homepage has breadcrumb schema. Basic, but it's a start.
The breadcrumbs suggest someone has been thinking about site structure. Now that structure needs content behind it. Adding LocalBusiness schema and building out service-specific pages with proper keyword targeting would make a meaningful difference.
Has schema: breadcrumbsA business that looks professional and credible, but the website doesn't reflect that yet. Limited service pages, content not optimised for keywords, no internal link strategy, no FAQs, no Google Posts. No schema markup of any kind.
This is a site that could punch well above its current weight with some structured work. The brand is there. The online presence just needs to catch up.
No schema markupA good note to end on. Good service pages, a well-optimised website, and the homepage has product snippets and review snippets schema implemented. One of the more complete sites in the group.
The main gap is no Google Posts. That's the only obvious thing holding this site back from being one of the strongest local electrician sites in Toowoomba.
Has schema: product & review snippetsThe Patterns I Kept Seeing
After going through 20 sites, six issues came up again and again.
What Toowoomba Electricians Should Do First
If you've read this far and you're wondering where to start, here's a practical order.
None of this is complicated. It just takes a clear plan and someone who knows what order to do things in.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes, especially LocalBusiness schema and AggregateRating schema. LocalBusiness schema helps Google verify your name, address, and phone number. AggregateRating schema gets your star rating showing up directly in search results, which makes your listing more clickable even when you're not ranking first. Most electrician websites in Toowoomba have neither. That's an opportunity.
-
Word of mouth has a ceiling. SEO works while you sleep. Someone searching for an electrician at 9pm on a Sunday isn't going to call their neighbour first. They're going to Google. If you're not showing up, someone else is getting that call.
-
For a site with almost no SEO work done, meaningful improvements in local rankings typically show up within 3 to 6 months. GBP improvements and schema changes can show results much faster, sometimes within weeks.
-
For local searches, your GBP is often what people see first. But both work together. A strong GBP with a weak website loses leads at the final step. A good website with a neglected GBP misses the local pack entirely. You need both.
-
Based on this audit, it's a tie between no service pages and no schema markup. Both are fixable, and both have a direct impact on how many people can find you through search.
